Why Being Selfish is Necessary

My experience of being on an artist path is one of solitude. Usually, I work alone, my practice takes place alone, all the work that goes into the creation of that end thing start to finish is based on the inputs of my ability to show up and be there with the creation of the work.

To me it’s a type of  selfishness in the best way, the most noble way. There are a lot of negative connotations that are associated with the word selfishness. So for clarification, when I use the word in this context I mean “concerned exclusively with your intention without allowing anything outside of you to break that devotion”. This selfishness is founded on the principles of discipline, self introspection and willingness to obtain mastery. I feel it’s like this divine connection at work. The dedication of myself as a transmitter for creative imagination to live through me. The selfishness is rooted in the dedication to the work. The work that calls through me to be shared, to be given life. Perhaps it’s not selfishness at all but a life devoted to an act of serving creativity.

It’s clear though that whatever word you use to describe the discipline of going after what it is that calls to you, it requires sacrifice. And I am sure any who is currently pursuing their passion can relate to this. Because to grow any seed of your creation will require massive resources of your time. I believe time spent doing the things that call to your soul are a great use of your time.

Where is your selfishness rooted?

Sincerely,

Chloe’
