The invisible string that holds us and ties us to the past

Moving forward but always wrapped up in that experience that left us so altered

Never given ourselves the chance to process the experience

We push it down thinking time would push it away

But what we did was unconsciously create a cord that will forever tie us to that moment

The connection expressed in out behavior, decisions, our beliefs

Only consciousness will awaken and free us

How many life experiences are you still tethered to?

We all have experiences in life that affect us. Some of us able to these experiences in a way that they aren’t carried as a weight on our backs into our future. Others do the opposite. Those moments are so traumatic (hurtful and damaging to one’s sense of self) for them that they get stuck there and their future decisions, behaviors, thoughts, personalities are reflective of the part of them tied to the event in the past. Most of the time this is unconscious, unless we actively put in the work to be curious, go within ourselves, look under the scars and process the feelings and events that we once were not able/ready to.

Unprocessed trauma keeps us from living the life we’d be able to if we weren’t tethered to our past. It “restricts our movements and limits our choices” explains Dr. Andrea Brandt. Which “keeps you from being able to fully engage with life in the present. The healthy flow and processing of distressing emotions like anger, sadness, grief and fear are essential. You will never resolve underlying issues if you deny and run from your feelings.”
